FAQs

Q: What is the 'trusted local suppliers' service?

A: Our aim is to provide an independent professional trades register to assist you the consumer in avoiding rogue traders and finding quality vetted monitored and approved tradesmen and companies in your local area.

Q: Why use our service?

A: Our free, no obligation service will put you in touch with up to three professional FENSA or Certass registered home improvement companies in your area that will provide their best price to you for your requirements because they know that they will be competing against other professional installers who also want your business. This allows you to make an informed decision based on similar competitive quotations from experienced installers.

Q: Why not pick a contractor from the phone book?

A: This approach can be very time consuming and fruitless if none of the contractors are available, and may even result in you using a 'rogue' contractor with all the associated issues. With 'trusted local suppliers' you know that each trade professional who contacts you has been vetted, and is available and qualified to do your job.

Q: How are the suppliers vetted?

A: All our registered tradesmen not only have to abide by the 'Supplier Performance Charter' but they also have to provide us with customer references before we will register them on the site for inclusion in our list of bonafide tradespeople, further to this each member must be registered with FENSA or Certass.

Q: What is certass

A: Certass which stands for certification and self assessment, was formed several years ago and was one of the original Quality Mark certification bodies. It is therefore a natural progression for Certass to move into the self assessment market. The Statutory Instrument for Certass approval was made on 9th March 2006 and was laid before Parliament on 15th March 2006. The approval came into force on 6th April 2006 and has now been published by HMSO as Statutory Instrument 2006 No. 652.

Q: Where do you get references for trade professionals?

A: From people like you. To become a registered 'supplier' trade professionals must allow us to vet them and take the names of customers they have done work for. We then check these out independently. When contractors become registered to this service, their performance is regularly appraised by their new customers, reporting back to us. The suppliers are also randomly checked to make sure they are upholding the 'Supplier Performance Charter'.

Q: When will the tradesmen I have selected contact me

A: The tradesmen will contact you within 48hrs, the 'trusted local suppliers' automated system will email you to confirm that you have been contacted.

Q: How do I know that I'm getting good value?

A: Every tradesman has made a simple commitment - to ensure that you get good quality work at a fair price. You'll receive 'like minded' quotes from local tradesmen who know that they are competing with other local companies for your business.

Q: What is Fensa?

A: Stands for the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme. It has been set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF), at the request of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in response to the current Building Regulations for England and Wales.

All replacement glazing in homes comes within the scope of the Building Regulations. Anyone who installs replacement windows or doors has to comply with current thermal performance standards.

Q: Why do I need an insurance backed guarantee?

A: It is common practice for many local authorities to insist that the work carried out by their approved contractors is backed by insurance.

If your contractor is unable to honour your guarantee due to receivership, administration or the winding up of the business due to bankruptcy, the insurance policy underwrites his written guarantee and takes the place of his guarantee for the remaining term of the cover.

Every member of the trusted local suppliers network is backed by FENSA or Certass certification. This is a government backed scheme of self certification and inspection.

You may require the insurance backed guarantee when you come to sell your property.

You may not be able to sell your property without an approved insurance backed guarantee. If you do not have a guarantee you may have to pay for separate inspection of your property to make sure the installation has been carried out to the correct standards.

Q: Who issues my insurance backed Guarantee?

As part of the 'Trusted Local Suppliers' service WE will issue you with a FREE Insurance backed guarantee which will cover your project.
